LWS-CDAW 2007 - Main Page

A meeting devoted to the study of the geomagnetic storms of solar cycle 23 will be held at the Florida Institute of Technology during March 5-9, 2007, under the auspices of NASA's Living With a Star program. This is a follow-up to the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW) in March 2005. This meeting will bring together scientists of Living With a Star (LWS) disciplines to interact and establish long-term collaborations that can effectively address questions related to CMEs, ICMEs, and their connections to geomagnetic and ionospheric storms. The focal point of the CDAW will be the set of all major geomagnetic storms of cycle 23 (from 1996 to 2005). The meeting will consist of a CDAW and conference components. The CDAW part will be devoted to the analysis of all geomagnetic storms of cycle 23 (including the ones in 2005).

The conference will consist of invited and contributed (oral, poster) presentations, with a limit of 100 participants. Overview talks will be included to focus on cross-disciplinary topics. The presentations will be on the results obtained during and after the 2005 CDAW. The presentations at this meeting will form the basis for papers to be considered for publication in special sections in GRL and JGR soon after the meeting. Contributions are hereby solicited on any topic related to geomagnetic storms of cycle 23. Papers on storms from other cycles are also invited, provided they compare them with the cycle 23 storms.
Papers addressing the following key scientific questions are especially welcome:

Heliosphere and Sun-Earth Connectedness
Can we infer the magnetic field structure (Bz south) from the photospheric magnetograms?
What is the relationship between solar filaments and the ICME flux ropes?
What are the primary characteristics that make a CME geoeffective?
What types of ICMEs are most geoeffective?
What is the best way to predict the intensity of geomagnetic storms?
Why do some storms have no associated CMEs?
Why don't some Earth-directed CMEs cause storms?

Global Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Response
How does the polar cap potential respond to an ICME?
How and with what time delays do IMF changes propagate their effects to the inner and outer magnetosphere?
What is the time-dependent global form of the electromagnetic disturbance associated with dipolarization and substorm injection, at and inside geosynchronous orbit?
What is the missing physics in MHD models, and where do they need improvement?

Inner Magnetosphere and Ionosphere Response
How do ICMEs affect the ring current and radiation belts?
What roles do intense sub-auroral polarization streams (SAPS) and auroral convection play in determining the ionospheric signature of the plasmapause?
Where does eroded plasmaspheric plasma go, and does it participate in reconnection?
What role do wave-particle interactions inside plasmaspheric plumes play in determining the global structure of the ring current?
How do plasmaspheric plumes affect ionospheric TEC and subsequent smaller-scale plasma structuring?
